When the hair drug test first emerged, it was met with some skepticism and disbelief. Could it be possible that a few hair strands can be the key to finding out how much drugs and what kinds of chemicals one person’s body has been holding? The answer is yes, because the hair drug test is a method that is very effective, even when compared against blood tests and urinalysis, which are the more traditional drug testing methods. This is because the hair follicles collect substances in the body over time while the hair has yet to grow out from the scalp, and the substances do remain there all the way up to the time when hair finally grows out.

A drug test is usually conducted by most institutions to be able to detect drug dependence of a person. Most companies require drug testing as part of the screening process for new employees; it is a must when obtaining a driver’s license; some universities require drug testing before admitting students; police investigations use drug testing in solving cases; custody battles are sometimes concluded by a result of a simple drug test. These, among others, are some situations where drug testing is very helpful.

Prohibited drugs has been wreaking havoc in society for a very long time now. In fact, ever since they were introduced to society, countless crimes have been committed by people under their influence. Countless lives have also been taken because of them. No matter what angle you look at them, drug abuse would always be a pariah to society even though some would claim that they would be able to cure certain diseases.

Drug testing has been attracting plenty of attention in the news lately, especially when pertaining to sports. Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao, for example, has been challenged by fellow boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr.’s father to undergo drug testing due to his performances in his recent boxing matches. Even racehorses are under scrutiny at the moment, because of possible performance enhancing substances. And let’s not forget all those baseball and football players who have tested positive for steroids, severely damaging their reputations as athletes and casting a shadow on sports in general.

Many insurance companies, law enforcement officers, and hiring companies use a hair follicle drug test to narrow down the possibility of someone using illegal drugs. This type of drug test is very accurate and not only shows the type of drug, but whether it was used in small amounts or regular usage. The test typically shows the drugs that the subject has done in the past 90 days. They can often be purchased for home use and office use.

For many people, having to submit a urine sample for the purpose of drug testing is just annoying and inconvenient, particularly during the moment when they have to collect the sample. Taking an alcohol test is not the easiest thing in the world to do. Sure, undergoing the process itself is easy, but it can be pretty nerve-wracking if you have a serious reason why you need the alcohol test in the first. Alcohol tests are done for a variety of reasons. One reason to take the test is if you are ordered by a court to do so, particularly in cases of child custody. You have to prove that you are a fit parent, and that you have been sober for a while, if you have a history of abusing alcohol. Going through child custody proceedings coupled with the pressure of taking–and passing–the alcohol test is enough to make one a bit nervous, to say the least.

Taking alcohol or drug tests used to involve no other substances than blood and urine, which are fairly reliable sources, of course, but not exactly something that is a delight to handle. These days, hair drug testing or the hair strand test is becoming the more commonly preferred way to test an individual for drugs or alcohol in his or her system. This should come as a relief for people who are squeamish about having blood extracted from their bodies and those who are unable to instantly produce the substance required for a urinalysis.

Drug use and abuse has never ceased to be a problem across all groups, countries, and social classes. Not only does it cause problems for the drug user’s family, friends, and colleagues, but it also threatens the user’s life and has a negative effect on his or her points of view and the way he or she relates to other people. Unfortunately, although some people have preconceived notions about drug users and how they live, there really is no single template for a person who uses and abuses drugs. A drug user could be anyone around you, and you won’t really know who he or she is at first glance.

Over the past years, drug testing has become a lot more accurate and convenient. Before, all drug testing can only be conducted in a clinic or a laboratory, and these days, you can do drug tests in the comfort and privacy of your own home–a good idea if you don’t want to wait a long time for the results and if you just want to test yourself out of curiosity. However, if you are to undergo drug testing for a more serious purpose–whether it’s required for work or as part of a court’s requirements in a divorce or child custody battle–you’re going to need to go to an actual facility that specializes in drug testing; results from home drug testing kits won’t do.
